I quite strongly disagree with an earlier comment explaining that everyone is too busy to be bothered opening gifts, and that is creates awkward, self-conscious feelings. A sip-and-see baby party, also known as an after-baby shower or welcoming-the-new-baby party, is an informal gathering of close friends, acquaintances, and families to fawn over the newborn and congratulate the new parents. The two grandmothers (her mother and MIL) hosted her baby shower and it was a total blow-out in a restaurant with buffets of food and over the top decorations. At 4:30, there were still groups chatting away I felt gratified that they felt comfortable in our home to stay and catch up with each other. We set it up as an open house from 2-4 on a Sunday. Sure enough, they all showed up and we had a houseful. We invited around 22 of her friends by the day before the sprinkle I had 6 RSVPs.
The sip-n-see didn't make sense to me, but now I realize it's just the same as the baby sprinkle, except that the baby is a guest!
